Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) recently visited Saint George's Church of England School in Gravesend as part of the Make it Make Sense (MiMS) initiative. CACT staff, along with content creator Ola Pelovangu, delivered an engaging careers session to Year 9 and 10 students, conveying the key messages that MiMS aims to share with young people.
The MiMS initiative is a collaborative programme launched by CACT and the University of Greenwich to support young people across South East London and Kent. The programme aims to help students feel more positive and confident about their futures by breaking down the complexities of life beyond school into manageable, actionable steps. MiMS focuses on raising aspirations, building essential life skills, and preparing students for future careers, equipping them with the tools they need to succeed. The programme is a key part of the longstanding partnership between CACT and the University of Greenwich.
As part of the MiMS delivery at Saint George's Church of England School, content creator Ola delivered an engaging session with students in which she shared details about her career path, the skills she has developed and practical advice on how students can achieve their post-school ambitions.
“This session aimed to open the students’ minds to thinking about life outside of school,” Ola said. “I talked to them about my career path, the skills I have picked up and how the students can achieve what they want in their careers by using the skills which they need to get there.
“Charlton has always been driven by community work; the fact a reputable football club supports these sessions along with the University of Greenwich shows the students that this programme is taken seriously.”
David James, CACT’s Director of Education and Sport, said: “It was fantastic to have an external voice discuss their journey and the different skills they have learned across their career. It offered the young people a different example of where they can get to. They’re able to take things away from the sessions which will help them in their next steps after leaving school.
“We’ve worked in different schools across Greenwich, Bexley and Kent. Each delivery is different from one school to the next, which allows them to get what they want out of MiMS.”
