Charlton Invicta’s Gary Ginnaw proudly represented the Addicks and Invicta at last month’s International Gay Lesbian Football Association (IGLFA) World Football Championships.
Charlton Invicta co-founder, chair and player Gary played for London United FC in the 25th IGLFA World Football Championships, which took place in Buenos Aires. Players from fellow London-based LGBTQ+ sides such as London Titans and London Falcons merged together for the tournament and played under the banner of London United FC.
Following a semi-final defeat to Uruguay Celeste, Gary and his London United teammates settled for bronze medals after a 4-0 win against Sydney Rangers in a third-place play-off clash.
Gary Ginnaw said: “It was an unbelievable experience to play football in Buenos Aires. It was my first time visiting South America, and it was a truly unique experience.
“A group of players from six different clubs came together, having never played together before. We went unbeaten, conceded only one goal in six games, and came home with a more than deserved third-place bronze medal.
“These types of events don't come around very often, and not everyone gets the opportunity to play football and feel accepted as their authentic self. I'm very lucky to have been able to travel and be part of something really special. I've made some great friends on this trip.
“We have a powerful LGBTQ+ football family across the UK and beyond. We are able to provide so many football and social opportunities to the community. The Gay Football Supporters Network (GFSN) was formed in 1989 and now has over 26 member and associate clubs across the UK and Ireland. We have to continue to push the boundaries, challenge discrimination, and celebrate the power we have as a collective. This tournament really does go to show that together we can achieve anything.
“I can't wait for the next IGLFA World Championships. But first, our aim at Charlton Invicta FC is to take our own team to the EGLSF EuroGames in Lyon in 2025. Having experienced the games in Rome in 2019 and achieved a silver medal, it’s time we embarked on another Charlton EuroGames journey.”
