Charlton 0 Brighton & Hove Albion 0 (Charlton win 4-3 on penalties)

The Valley was rocking as Charlton beat Premier League-side Brighton & Hove Albion in a penalty shootout to move into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

A well-organised Charlton defence kept the Seagulls at bay with some brave defending and a superb display by Ashley Maynard-Brewer in goal as the two sides drew 0-0 after 90 minutes.

In a heart-stopping shootout, that saw the woodwork hit three times, Charlton kept their cool, with Maynard-Brewer saving from Moises Caicedo before Sam Lavelle smashed home the winning penalty to the delight of the passionate home support.

Caretaker Manager, Anthony Hayes, in his final game in charge before new Manager Dean Holden takes the reigns on Thursday, made three changes, with Miles Leaburn starting up front in a 3-4-3 formation that played closer to a 5-4-1 for much of the game.

The Addicks had a first look at goal in the third minute when Jack Payne’s cross to the back post was met by a sliding Leaburn, whose shot was too close to goalkeeper Jason Steele.

The visitors controlled much of the first half possession with the highlight a touch of quality from former England international Adam Lallana with a beautiful bit of control on the volley setting up a shot on his left foot which clipped the crossbar with Ashley Maynard-Brewer beaten.

Maynard-Brewer was called into action in the first half, doing well to tip a Solly March shot over the crossbar.

Payne forced another comfortable save from Steele and while Brighton continued to control possession, the best chance of the half fell to the Addicks. Jes Rak-Sayi played in Steven Sessegnon behind the Brighton defence on the right wing. Lewis Dunk made a last-ditch block to keep out the Fulham loanee's effort.  

Maynard-Brewer was called back in to action early in the second half but got down well to keep out Deniz Undav’s shot from range. Just before the hour mark the Australian made a great save to tip a Dunk header over the crossbar.

The Brighton second-half pressure continued and March did all the hard work dancing past four defenders and looked certain to score before putting his shot wide of the Charlton post.

Maynard-Brewer saved well from substitute Leandro Trossard as the visitors turned the screw but the Addicks were able to hold on to take it to penalties.

It was Charlton that kept their cool, with Lavelle scoring the winning penalty as the Addicks won the shootout 4-3 to book a place in Thursday’s draw.
