Mansfield Town 1 Charlton 2
Tyreece Campbell had the Charlton fans singing his name as the Addicks beat Mansfield Town 2-1 to move within six points of second-placed Wrexham.
The 21-year-old’s 75th-minute winner was his third goal of the week and helped Charlton to a 15th win in their last 22 league games.
Earlier Matty Godden had netted his 17th goal of the season to give Charlton the lead before Matthew Craig’s stunning equaliser just before half time.
The win moves Charlton 10 points clear of seventh place Reading with just six games remaining.
Nathan Jones had to make one change to the side that beat Huddersfield Town on Saturday, with Tom McIntyre making his first start for the club, in place of Lloyd Jones, missing with a minor calf injury. McIntyre, who joined the Addicks on loan from Portsmouth in January, showed bravery and commitment to the cause in an impressive full Charlton debut.
The Addicks started brightly and came close in just the second minute, Campbell beating his man to get a cross in from the left but Thierry Small was unable to guide his header goalwards.
Macaulay Gillesphey and Small both forced comfortable saves from Stags’ goalkeeper Christy Pym before the Addicks took the lead in the 25th-minute.
The goal came from good pressing by Nathan Jones’ side, forcing Louis Reed into a sloppy attempted pass back to his goalkeeper. The ball went straight to the in-form Godden, putting him in one-on-one and the Addicks striker made no mistake, sending the goalkeeper to his right and passing the ball into the empty net.
Charlton’s early dominance was highlighted by the fact that Mansfield’s first attempt on goal came in the 27th minute.
Reed then came close to redeeming himself, curling a shot just wide before Josh Edwards’ whipped shot cleared the home side’s crossbar.
Mansfield’s equaliser was a wonderful half-volley from the edge of the area by Craig. The Addicks’ had cleared a dangerous ball into the box but the ball sat up for the midfielder who cracked his shot past Will Mannion.
The goal buoyed the home side, who had a good end of the first half and start to the second before the Addicks regained their control on the game.
After a Small cross could only be cleared for a corner, Edwards saw a shot from close range blocked to safety.
With 15 minutes remaining it was Campbell to step forward and add to his two excellent goals at The Valley on Saturday. Substitute Chuks Aneke rolled a smart pass across the edge of the area to the former academy player, who used two touches to take the ball around his defender and into the box, before finding the bottom corner of the net with an excellent driven strike.
From there Charlton were able to see the game out without conceding any clear-cut changes. Nathan Jones’ side return to The Valley on Saturday for the visit of Lincoln City, with the Addicks looking to add to their eight consecutive home wins in the league.
