Addicks victory ensures EFL Trophy progress

Charlton celebrate

Charlton 3 Chelsea U21s 0

Two goals from the head of Miles Leaburn helped the Addicks to a 3-0 win against Chelsea U21s, ensuring Nathan Jones’ side qualified to the round of 32 in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy with a game remaining.

Tyreece Campbell netted in stoppage time to put the icing on the cake, while at the other end Ashley Maynard-Brewer was in inspired form and kept a deserved clean sheet.

Jones opted for 10 changes from the starting XI that drew 2-2 with Wrexham on Saturday, with skipper Greg Docherty retaining his place.

Starting in a 4-box-2 formation the Addicks began brightly, with Thierry Small shooting over the bar from outside the area in the eighth minute.

The Charlton left back was then instrumental in his side’s 10th-minute opener – bombing down the left wing, Small’s deep cross on the run was perfect for Leaburn at the back post. The 20-year-old used his height, towering over his defender and heading confidently past Chelsea stopper Max Merrick, netting his first goal since returning from injury.

Allan Campbell nearly doubled Charlton’s lead four minutes later but Merrick was just able to get back in time to deny the midfielder’s clever dinked shot from the edge of the area.

Maynard-Brewer was first called in to action nine minutes before half-time. The Australian stopper stood strong to deny Shumaira Mheuka from close range.

An early second-half chance fell for Mheuka in the penalty area who was denied by an even better save from Maynard-Brewer.

The Addicks second came in the 52nd minute and followed an excellent save from Merrick to keep out Docherty’s long-range shot. From the resulting, deep Terry Taylor corner Leaburn headed in at the back post.

Maynard-Brewer made an excellent double save from substitute Reiss Russel-Deny and then Mhueka again before coming out well to deny another substitute Ato Ampah.

Both goalkeepers were kept busy with Merrick doing well to keep out Tyreece Campbell, before Danny Hylton’s shot was blocked over the crossbar. Merrick then made an outstanding low save to keep out a powerful Hylton header.

Tyreece Campbell made it the perfect finish with the third goal deep in stoppage time. Hylton's controlled a high ball exquisitely and played in the striker who cut inside and finished confidently.
