Alex Mitchell joins the Addicks

Charlton Athletic are delighted to announce the permanent signing of highly-rated defender Alex Mitchell from Millwall for an undisclosed fee.

The 22-year-old was a key part of a Lincoln City side that had the second-best defence in Sky Bet League One last season.

Mitchell has signed a three-year contract with the Addicks and becomes Nathan Jones’ fourth signing of the summer following the arrivals of Will Mannion, Luke Berry and Josh Edwards.

He said: "I'm very happy to get it done early doors. As soon as I knew Charlton were interested it was a no-brainer for me. It's a massive club. I played against Charlton last season and last time I came to The Valley I was in awe of the stadium. I thought the fanbase was top so I'm really looking forward to it.

"My chats with Nathan [Jones] have been really positive. He made it clear that he wanted me and to feel valued like that was a big part in me coming here. I can't wait to work with him."

Nathan Jones commented: "Alex is someone I’ve known for a while so I’m really pleased to bring him to Charlton. He has gone out on loan and played games which is important for a young lad. He is someone that is an excellent defender and someone that will make us stronger, more competitive and more aggressive.

"He has so much scope to grow. He’s 22 and played a lot of games and is nowhere near his ceiling. He did fantastically well at Lincoln last season and was a big part of their strong push in the second half of the season. He’s a player I'm very excited to work with."

Technical Director Andy Scott said: "We’re really pleased to be able to bring Alex to Charlton. He had an outstanding season at Lincoln City last year, showing real promise in a side that proved very difficult to beat and play against. We believe he is a player that has all the attributes to be grow into a top defender at this level and above. He has excellent pace and strength, is aggressive and is a leader but also reads the game well and is good on the ball.

"In Nathan, we have a Manager that will work with players and help take them to the next level.
We are delighted Alex chose  to join us as he was highly sought after and I’m looking forward to watching him progress with us."

Mitchell joined Millwall in 2018 where he was voted Academy Schoolboy of the Year after immediately catching the eye.

He enjoyed an impressive spell on loan at Bromley in 2021 before joining Leyton Orient for the 2021/22 season.

Another successful loan followed in 2022/23 at Scottish Premiership side St Johnstone, where he was named the Saints Young Player of the Year.

His performances attracted the interest of the Imps who signed him on loan for the 2023/24 season. He played a vital role in a defence that conceded just 40 goals, with only promoted Derby County conceding less.
