Michael Appleton wants to see his Charlton side play to their strengths against Wigan Athletic on Tuesday.
The Addicks travel to the DW Stadium on the back of successive reverses against Lincoln City and Bolton Wanderers.
“First and foremost, we need to be resolute and our first target has to be to try and keep a clean sheet," explained Appleton. "We did that on the road at Shrewsbury which was pleasing and that has to be our initial mindset.
"But you’ve got to be careful because the reality is that the group, as it stands at the minute, sort of weighs heavy towards the frontline," he added. "That’s something that we can address in January, but until then we’ve got to make sure that we work to our strengths.”
The hosts come into the clash having recorded three wins on the spin without conceding.
“Wigan will pose a good test," said Appleton. "Shaun [Maloney] has definitely changed it around in terms of the style a little bit. They do look to switch the play and pass the ball from side-to-side a lot more than what they’ve done previously; previously they’ve gone very, very quickly from back to front. Clearly, they’re in good form and it’s a test we’re looking forward to.
“Shaun has done a fantastic job there, obviously it was difficult circumstances last year with the relegation. I’ve been in that position at Pompey where you’re starting the season on minus points and it’s not easy. Shaun’s in a really good spell of form with the team with three wins on the bounce and they’ll certainly be looking forward to us coming tomorrow.”
