Charlton 1 Leyton Orient 0
The Addicks made it two league wins from two to start the season on Saturday afternoon, a stoppage time winner from Luke Berry securing a 1-0 win against Leyton Orient.
The visitors had the better of the early half-chances, with Ollie O’Neill and Charlie Kelman both having shots from range in the opening 10 minutes, the former blocked by Alex Mitchell and the latter rolling just wide of Will Mannion’s right post.
A number of stoppages for injuries meant the half struggled to get going, and the worst came in the 24th minute when a poor challenge from Sean Clare left Josh Edwards needing a stretcher to leave the field.
The Addicks responded well and had an opportunity on the half-hour mark when Greg Docherty’s pull-back escaped Gassan Ahadme and Berry saw his volley from 10 yards blocked by Jordan Brown.
Six minutes later Kelman was played in behind by a long ball from Tom James, but Macaulay Gillesphey did enough to put the forward off, and his tame shot was held by Mannion.
Charlton had the majority of possession in the second period but for the most part were restricted to shots from range.
Berry went close in the 52nd minute when Conor Coventry’s deep cross was knocked back to him by Gillesphey, but his shot was blocked by Brown.
With 20 minutes to go, the Addicks had two long-range efforts in two minutes – Coventry’s curling just over and Kayne Ramsay’s deflecting off Lewis Warrington, looping up and over a helpless Zach Hemming, but glancing off the bar and over.
As the game wore on the O’s looked happy to take the point, slowing the game down at every opportunity.
But the Addicks were not to be denied. Chuks Aneke had made a difference since his introduction and in the 92nd minute he flicked on a long ball from Gillesphey.
Coventry reacted quickest and poked the ball left to Berry, who ran onto it and swept the ball in at the near post with his right foot, before racing away to celebrate in front of a delirious Covered End.
It would prove the last action of the game, and Nathan Jones’ side can now begin preparations for Bolton Wanderers next Saturday having claimed six points from six to start the season.
