Garner praises "professional" Addicks

Garner claps Charlton supporters

Ben Garner praised wingers Jack Payne and Tyreece Campbell for the parts they played in the Addicks 4-1 win at home to Coalville Town in the first round of the FA Cup.

Payne scored twice and assisted Jayden Stockley while Campbell was a constant threat and set-up Payne’s opener.

Speaking to CharltonTV, Garner said: “I thought Jack Payne and Tyreece Campbell were both excellent today. Payney showed his quality, he’s got a really good return in terms of goals and assists this season. The second one was brilliant. It’s even harder than it looks because he is on the run, to take the touch and finish as he did is a great skill, it really is.

“For me that is TC’s best game in a Charlton shirt so far. I thought he was bright, he was energetic, he was direct. It was a great ball in for the first goal. The next level now for TC is goals and assists, get numbers. He’s got that ability one-v-one, he’s learning the game, he’s coming on all the time. The change for him now is regularly contributing with goals and assists because he’s got the ability to do it.”

Garner was also swift to pay tribute to seventh-tier Coalville Town.

“Massive credit to Coalville,” he said, “I said they were excellent last round against Notts County and they showed their organisation, togetherness and spirit today. They did really well. It was a good occasion for them, brilliant support from them and hopefully some brilliant memories those lads can take away for the remainder of their careers.

“From our perspective, I thought we were really professional, a good performance. We probably should have scored more goals but other than that, a really good performance and safely through to the next round.”

Terell Thomas limped off in the first half and was replaced by 17-year-old Zach Mitchell.

Garner said: “That’s a big disappointment today is the injury to Terell, because we are so short on defenders. We had nine [players] missing today for different reasons. We’ll have to assess that and see how that is but that is a blow if he has picked something up.

“Zach Mitchell started in the week for us and obviously came on early today and did fantastic. He’s composed, a great attitude. He does really well for Jayden’s header [Charlton’s second goal], in terms of his movement in the box from the set piece. He defended well, talks very well for a young player. He’s got a lot to learn, a long way to go but he’s certainly a prospect for us and one we are looking forward to working with and developing here.”
