Gillesphey: 'We’ve got good momentum'

Macaulay Gillesphey is keen for Charlton to continue the momentum when they take on Preston North End in the Emirates FA Cup third round on Saturday (KO 3pm GMT).

The Addicks took 10 points from a possible 12 during a positive festive period, conceding just once in that time.

"It was good and also very busy - there were a lot of games," said the centre-back. "We’ve had some good results and we've been solid. Everyone's feeling positive and we're looking forward to the next game.

"That's one of the things the gaffer says: we’ve got good momentum and we need to build on it, which I'm sure we will.

"Being a Championship side, Preston are going to be good, but we’ve just got to concentrate on ourselves and see what we can do."

The 29-year-old will be celebrating a year at the club on Sunday having made the permanent switch to SE7 last January.

“My time here has gone by so quick!” he said. “I actually can’t believe that, I didn't really think about it. I’ve really enjoyed it so far and hopefully I can enjoy the years to come.”

Last weekend's goalless draw with Reading took Charlton's tally of league clean sheets to 10, with Gillesphey forming a solid partnership alongside Alex Mitchell and Lloyd Jones in Nathan Jones' back three.

"It’s always good to get clean sheets as a defender," Gillesphey explained. "I think it comes from up front as well, along with the midfield and the wing-backs. Everyone's been playing really well and Ash [Maynard-Brewer] has made a few good saves as well. When that all comes together, you get clean sheets.

"It’s been great. Lloyd [Jones] is experienced and is crucial in that middle role in the three, it really helps out a lot. Alex [Mitchell] is only a young boy, but he’s really switched on and is playing well."

The Addicks will be well back once again this weekend, with 1,000 supporters set to make the trip up to Deepdale.

"The away fans are class to be fair to them, always making plenty of noise at away games. That always helps massively."

The defender will be hoping to replicate fond memories in the competition this weekend, having headed Plymouth Argyle in front against Chelsea back in February 2022.

"It was unbelievable at Stamford Bridge all those years ago, scoring that header," he smiled. "It was an unbelieve experience. Hopefully one of the lads can replicate that by scoring this weekend!"
