Matty Godden spoke to CharltonTV as the Addicks were condemned to a 2-1 defeat at The Valley against Crawley Town.
The forward captained the side as Nathan Jones’ team faced a late defeat upon their return to SE7.
“We didn’t show the standards that we did in our recent few games," he said. "We felt that tonight we could start to build some real momentum, that is kind of how the season has gone, we perform well for a couple of games and then we step back, and it knocks the stuffing out of us.
“When you go 1-0 down, naturally it breeds a bit of nervousness. When we got the equaliser, we deserved it. If you look back at the game, they didn’t really hurt us a great deal at all. We have obviously conceded a long-range goal and then a poor goal at the end. We need to stand up now, that is what we need to do, there is no point in being nervous, you need to take games by the scruff of the neck.”
The games are coming thick and fast for the Addicks as we enter the festive period, with a trip to Lincoln City at the weekend. Godden emphasised the importance of returning to the standards that we showed against Burton Albion and Walsall.
“We have to get back to the mentality that we had last week. We need to go up to Lincoln and try to rectify what has happened tonight.”
Lloyd Jones and Daniel Kanu made their return to the squad having faced lengthy spells on the sidelines, with the latter netting from the bench.
“We don’t want to use it as an excuse, but everyone can see the injuries that we have had have been big injuries, we haven’t had little ones," Godden said. "We have suffered a lot with long-term injuries. As a team and a club, we don’t want to use that as an excuse, it gives everyone an opportunity to go out there and show what you can do. To have them both back is a big boost for us."
