Greenwich Mayor visits E-Z Bike scheme

Mayor of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, Cllr Christine May, visited Charlton Athletic Community Trust’s (CACT) E-Z Cycle scheme on Sunday 10 March.

The scheme allows Royal Greenwich residents to hire an electric, pedal-assisted bicycle for one month for just £10, which covers insurance.

The Mayor said:

“It was a really good experience, and I’m pleased to see how popular it is, and people’s perception when they get here thinking it’s going to be awful, but they are going away really, really smiling.

“In fact the other day, my husband [a Cycle Confidence instructor who supports the scheme] said there was a chap who came along with his wife, and he really didn’t want to be here, and he absolutely loved it. And it’s absolutely wonderful, people can hire it for a month and then decide. CACT do sterling work, brilliant!”

The pedal assistance gives a great boost up hills or starting off from junctions and are a great option for people who are new to cycling or if they’ve not cycled for a long time.

The scheme was trialled in the Greenwich Low Emission Zone as a way of reducing emissions in the Greenwich West and Peninsula wards by promoting active travel. After the trial proved to be successful, the scheme was rolled out across the whole borough on 26 January.
