A group of pupils from John Roan School in Greenwich got an exclusive look behind the scenes at Charlton Athletic’s training ground, Sparrows Lane in New Eltham last Monday, 28th November.
They took a tour of the club’s facilities and had a Q&A with some of the club’s coaching staff. They quizzed Assistant Manager Kevin Nugent, Head of Sports Science Carl Serrant and Physiotherapist Richard Potts on the rigours of the game and the pathways young people can take to a career in the game.
They were then lucky enough to observe a first team training session, the first Charlton Athletic were taking under new manager Karl Robinson.
The youngsters were taking the trip as part of their BTEC Level 2 in Sport. Their observations from the visit will form part of their coursework.
Assistant Manager Kevin Nugent said: “We really enjoyed meeting the young people from John Roan. I was very impressed with the quality of the questions. I wish them well with their coursework and their future careers.”
Marc Merridan, PE teacher at John Roan said, “The boys loved their visit. It gave them an invaluable insight into life at a professional club. Some of them have been inspired to work harder towards a career in sports science.”
