Hayes on Charlton's loss at Stockport County

Anthony Hayes looks on

Anthony Hayes said his players were hurting after Charlton’s exit from the FA Cup following a 3-1 loss at Stockport County.

The Caretaker Manager, speaking after his first game in charge, saw his side go in front, before a Will Collar hat-trick eliminated the Addicks from the competition.

He said: “I thought it was a scrappy game over the 90 minutes. I didn’t think there was much between either side in the first half. They are good at what they do, they get balls into the box, they break from midfield really well.

“I think we are disappointed that the second half lacked any flow to the game with player injuries and lengthy stoppages but we didn’t defend our own half well enough. We gave fouls away, invited pressure, our defensive line was too deep. To concede from two set plays is really disappointing. It is a similar story to the first tie we played against them.”

The Addicks travel to Morecambe on Saturday. Hayes said: “The important thing between now and Saturday is to recover, use the time we have at the hotel to go through tonight’s game and prepare as best we can for the game against Morecambe.”
