Johnnie Jackson’s name is synonymous with Charlton Athletic, a club he served with pride both as a player and later as Manager.
During his tenure at The Valley, Jackson left a mark on and off the pitch that fans would never forget.
Arrival and immediate impact
Jackson initially joined Charlton Athletic on loan from Notts County in October 2010. The midfielder quickly established himself as a vital figure in the team, and it wasn’t long before he made the move permanent in January 2011.
Leading the team to promotion
One of Jackson’s most significant achievements came during the 2011/2012 campaign. Appointed as Chris Powell's captain, he led Charlton to an unforgettable League One title, amassing a remarkable 101 points to secure promotion to the Championship. His contribution was not just about leadership; Jackson was prolific in front of goal for a midfielder, scoring 13 league goals that season. His crucial strikes - including two stunning free-kicks in the space of a week against Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday - showcased his ability to deliver in critical movements.
Consistency and loyalty
Jackson’s consistency was vital for Charlton throughout the years in the Championship. Despite managerial changes and fluctuating team performances, he remained a steadying influence. His loyalty to the club was particularly evident during times of uncertainty, making 279 appearances across all competitions and always leading by example on the pitch.
Memorable matches and iconic goals
Throughout his Charlton career, Jackson had a habit for scoring important goals. In November 2012, with the Addicks two goals down at home to Cardiff City in the opening stages, two goals from Jackson clawed it back to 2-2. Charlton would go on to win 5-4 and win three of their next four.
He had a knack for finding a goal when the team needed it most - another standout moment came in a dramatic 4-3 triumph at Watford on New Year’s Day in 2013, when Jackson’s bullet header claimed a victory late on.
Perhaps his most iconic goal came in February 2014, when another header from a corner snatched a stoppage-time win over high-flying QPR. It would go some way to ensuring the Addicks’ Championship status for another year.
Transition to coaching and continuing the Charlton legacy
Having already been appointed as a new First-Team Coach ahead of his last season playing for the club, Jackson seamlessly transitioned into a coaching role at Charlton, further cementing his legacy at the club. Upon hanging up his boots in 2018, Jackson took up a role as Assistant Manager, and became an integral part of the coaching set-up, imparting his knowledge and experience to the next generation of players. His understanding of the club’s ethos and his ability to inspire players ensured that his influence extended beyond his playing days.
Stepping up as the Interim Manager
In March 2021, Jackson took on the role of Interim Manager following the departure of Lee Bowyer. Although it was a short spell, it highlighted Jackson’s potential and readiness to take on significant responsibilities within the club. After the departure of Nigel Adkins later in 2021, Jackson was again chosen to step in - but this time, after winning nine of his first 13, he was named as permanent Manager.

Jackson’s departure from Charlton in 2022 marked the end of an era. However, his contributions to the club were celebrated by fans and colleagues who recognised the immense impact he had on the club.
