Jones: 'The fans have such a part to play'

Nathan Jones has lauded the Charlton faithful for the special atmosphere they created during Saturday's 1-0 win over table toppers Birmingham City.

The Addicks restricted Blues, who, prior to last weekend, had won their last seven league outings, to three shots, none of which were on target.

"It was a really important win and it was important to bounce back from a disappointing week that we'd had prior to that," explained Jones. "But also when someone like Birmingham, who are without doubt one of the best teams in the league, come we want to put on a good performance, plus we don't want teams like that getting too far away from us.

"All in all it was a massive result and I was really, really pleased with the level of performance that we attained as well. We were very bold in our selection and the players implemented our gameplan superbly. It's as good a performance as you're likely to see out of possession, at any level.

"It's the first time that they've lost in the league and it just reiterates and rubber-stamps the work that we're doing."

"The fans are so important to this," continued the gaffer. "They have such a part to play and they can lift us. On Saturday they were magnificent from start to finish. With the greatest respect, it wasn't a League One game. I'm very respectful of the league that we're in and everything, but that was a really, really high-end game from both sides. The fans are so important to what we want to achieve and that's why I want to connect with them and I want them to believe in something."

"We have big games now against promotion rivals and we need that support," he added. "We love playing in front of that support, that's the big thing. I love it when The Valley rocks - I've seen it before when I've come here as a player and an opposing Manager. I love it when that happens and let's get this place rocking because it's a massive help to us."
