There was late drama as the Addicks drew 2-2 at Barnsley to achieve a point on the road but Manager Nathan Jones was disappointed with his side’s performance.
“The level of performance was a mile off what we prepared for,” he said. “If we’d done the basics better tonight we’d have won the game but we didn’t. Even the chance they had, if we win our headers tonight we win the game. Both of their goals came from us not winning headers – they hit the bar from us not winning headers.”
Luke Berry scored twice as the Addicks came from 1-0 behind to go 2-1 ahead before Max Watters equaliser in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
Jones said of Berry: “We needed someone that has been doing that for all his career to get us out of a little bit of a hole to be fair. Even at the 94th minute, I wasn’t sure we were seeing it out because some of the stuff I saw wasn’t the stuff we work on. It was just a bit crazy. It’s a point on the road, it’s a difficult place to come, another game unbeaten but I’m disappointed with the performance I’m honest.
Jones utlised his substitutes bench and explained his decision making: “We made the changes because we weren’t doing the basics. I had defenders who didn’t head it, I had defenders who didn’t defend the box, I had midfielders that got over-run – we had four-v-three in there and got over-run. That is not what I want from my football team. Anyone who sees my football team would say ‘they are at it’. We were a mile off where we need to be tonight.
“On the weekend we were excellent – absolutely at it but despite being dominant we didn’t win. Tonight we weren’t and got a point.
“We can take positives from it that they showed character to come from 1-0 down and have a midfield player that can score goals, is top for this level, and it is a point on the road.”
