Jones: 'We couldn’t get a rhythm'

Nathan Jones looks on

Nathan Jones shared his disappointment as the Addicks fell short with a 1-0 defeat at the Lamex Stadium against Stevenage.

Jordan Roberts’ 67th-minute strike separated the sides in Hertfordshire as Jones made six changes to the side which took on Blackpool last weekend.

"When you come here you know you have to do the basics well," Jones told CharltonTV. “We gave silly free-kicks away and we did that all afternoon. It allowed them to get a foothold of the game in terms of corners, set plays and things. We couldn’t get a rhythm. We were too nice to play against today. I didn't see the relentlessness about us.

“I thought we were excellent in the first 20 minutes - we penned them in and our structure looked good, then we stopped doing it," he explained. "We stopped playing with tempo and allowed them to get a foothold in the game. We had opportunities, Chuks [Aneke]’s chance is a great one - if he hits the target it's in. [Macaulay] Gillesphey had a chance as well."

Jones stressed the importance of bouncing back from the defeat as soon as possible ahead of Tuesday's trip to Bristol Rovers.

“It's really good that we have a game after, we can’t dwell on this," the boss said. "We have to go into another game and get a result. It’s disappointing to have faced back-to-back defeats - I don’t like doing that and we haven’t done that since I've been here. It’s a tough one to take, we have to bounce back and that's what we will be looking to do."
