Jones: 'We'll need good energy'

Charlton Athletic manager Nathan Jones is interviewed following the Sky Bet League 1 match at the Brick Community Stadium, Wigan

Nathan Jones plans to make use of his squad for Tuesday’s Carabao Cup first-round tie at home to Birmingham City, but believes whatever side he puts out will be a capable one.

“We want to be strong because it’s the first three games of the season now, then we’ve got a little bit of a break,” he said following the Wigan win on Saturday. “We’re going to need good energy because Birmingham are another wonderful side. We’ve got a real tough start.

“We want to treat the competition with respect,” explained the boss. “My owners will want to get a cup run, so they won’t want me to take the game lightly in any way. But we’ve got to trust the players. We’ve got to make sure that we use all the players and be in a good place moving forward."
