Charlton kick-off their 2022/23 Barclays Women’s Championship campaign with a trip to Hampshire to lock horns with Southampton Women on Saturday, August 20th (12:30 pm KO).
Having signed off their pre-season campaign with a narrow defeat to WSL outfit West Ham on Sunday, Karen Hills’ Addicks will be looking to get off to a winning start against the newly-promoted Saints at St Mary’s Stadium.
Southampton Women v Charlton
The Addicks head into the opening fixture off the back of an impressive pre-season campaign, with a 1-0 win over the reigning Scottish Premier League champions Rangers, a 2-0 victory against Ipswich Town and an 8-0 thrashing over Billericay Town. The Addicks rounded off pre-season with a marginal 2-1 loss to West Ham, with Yui Hasagawa’s brace cancelling out Heidi Logan’s early opener.
The hosts, Southampton, kicked off their pre-season with a 1-1 draw with Scottish side Celtic. A friendly between the Saints and Charlton was scheduled to take place on July 24th but was called off. A 0-0 draw with Lewes followed and they faced a 1-0 defeat to Leicester City in their final pre-season friendly on Sunday.
Southampton finished top of the National League Southern Division in 2021/22 losing one game all season, with Marieanne Spacey's side achieving promotion via the Championship playoff, winning 1-0 against the Northern Division winners Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The 2022/23 campaign will be the Saints’ first season in the second tier.
Saturday’s game will be the first meeting between the two sides
The Addicks will be debuting their third kit for the first time on Saturday.
