Mitchell and Rylah on first team debuts

Zach Mitchell and Henry Rylah expressed their pride after earning their first team debuts in the Addicks' Papa John's Trophy triumph over Brighton U21s on Wednesday.

17-year-old Mitchell, who started alongside Sam Lavelle at the heart of Ben Garner's defence, became the 17th academy product to feature for the men's first-team this season as Charlton secured their passage through to the competition's knockout stages.

He said: “I was obviously delighted to make my debut and it was topped off nicely with a win which takes us into the next round. Considering I've been at Charlton for quite a long time now, since the age of seven, and I have a lot of family that are Charlton supporters it was a nice night.

“Brighton are a very good side and we went in with the right mentality and we didn’t underestimate them. We did well as a team and it was good to get the win.

“Having Sam next to me definitely helped. Even off the pitch he gives you that encouragement and support. He introduced himself straight away and it was good to have that leadership."

Meanwhile, 16-year-old Rylah, who has starred for Danny Senda's U18s this term, replaced Tyreece Campbell 10 minutes from time.

“When anyone goes down you have got to be prepared to come on and make an impact," he said. "It was great to get on the pitch and be encouraged by all the boys as well; all the more experienced players were encouraging me no matter what happened. It was great to play at The Valley in front of the fans.

“I'm definitely now itching to have another opportunity and I'll be making sure I do what is needed whether it is U18s, U21s or the first team. No matter what it is I'm happy to make an impact.

“Seeing the likes of Joe Gomez and Ademola Lookman make it into the first team, we know that we can get opportunities and it's good to be at a club where you know it's possible."
