Mitchell: 'Charlton was a no-brainer'

'

Alex Mitchell was delighted as Charlton confirmed the capture of the commanding centre-back on a three-year deal from Millwall.

“I’m very happy to get it done early doors,” he said. “As soon as I knew Charlton were interested it was a no-brainer. It’s a massive club.”

Mitchell explained that his conversations with Nathan Jones played a big part in his decision to join the Addicks.

“He’s a big reason for coming. He charmed me!” he explained. “He made it clear that he wanted me. To feel valued like that was a big part of coming here, so I can’t wait to work with him.

“Everyone I’ve spoken to about the club has said it’s really good, so I’m looking forward to it.”

As Mitchell took the tour around The Valley, he was clearly impressed with his new home: “The stadium takes you back a bit. You grow up wanting to play in stadiums like this, so it’s a real full circle moment for myself."

The centre-back played for Lincoln City in a 1-1 draw in SE7 back in February, an occasion that left an impression. “Last time I came to The Valley I was a bit in awe of the stadium. I thought the fanbase was top,” he said.

“I could tell it was a good fanbase, especially with the time the club was going through. To be honest, I think you should have beaten us!”

Asked if there are any familiar faces in the dressing room, Mitchell said: “I’ve met Alfie [May] before. He’s very funny!” he said. “I know Zach Mitchell’s brother [Billy], so it will be interesting to see if they’re similar!

“Chuks [Aneke] came on [in the Lincoln game last season] and he threw me about - I can’t wait to train with him!” he laughed.

Having played in Sky Bet League One’s second-best defence last season, Mitchell is coming to Charlton on a high.

“My game used to be just heading and kicking but I feel like I can play a bit now!” he said.

“I pride myself on keeping clean sheets. That’s my game, so that’s what the fans can expect from myself. Hopefully we can have a similar defensive record to what I had last season.”
