The club’s U16s will take on a select XI in the first ever Pierre Bolangi Legacy Match in memory of the former player who tragically passed away in August 2000.
Pierre was taking part in the club’s U18s’ pre-season training camp in Aldershot when he got into difficulty and drowned during an army training exercise.
The game will take place at the club’s Sparrows Lane training ground on Wednesday, July 19th and will see the young Addicks take on a side compiled of talented young players who qualify as U16s for the 2023/24 season.
The game has been organised in conjunction with Pierre’s former teammate Kevin George and Soccology.
The game will give young players the opportunity to play against Charlton. Players who would like to be involved can trial for the game. More information can be found here: https://www.soccology.com/pierre-bolangi-3p3.
Academy Director, Steve Avory, said: "We're really looking forward to hosting this annual game for the first time as we remember Pierre Bolangi. It will be a really special occasion and it will be a good opportunity to see alternative talent within our catchment area and, of course, an opportunity for those players to showcase their skills and impress our recruitment department, quite possibly leading to a trial opportunity.”
Academy star Keenan Gough picked up the Pierre Bolangi award at the club’s Player of the Year Dinner in May. He became the second recipient for the award, after Seydil Toure won last season. The award, given to an U18 player who has demonstrated Pierre's characteristics of resilience, leadership, optimism and compassion, was created by Kevin George and Angelique Bolangi, Pierre's sister, to allow Pierre's Charlton legacy to live on.
