RIP Charlie Wright

Charlie Wright

Charlton Athletic are saddened to hear of the passing of former player Charlie Wright at the age of 86.

A widely popular player during his time at The Valley, Charlie signed for the club in 1966 from Grimsby Town and went on to play 209 times for the Addicks in all competitions.

Former teammate and club legend Keith Peacock paid tribute to one of football's great extraverts: “It was such sad news to hear that we’ve lost him. We remember him so well.

“Charlie was an extremely good goalkeeper, the crowd loved him because he was quite exciting in the way he played. During the period he was with us, we had a really good side.

“He was always happy and looking at the good side of everything. He’d come to games with some sweets and if he didn’t have much to do he would give out sweets to the young fans in the crowd - he never got caught out! They used to love it!

“I was coaching with him as a young coach for what is now the academy, so we got to know each other really well.

“He’ll be missed greatly, he was a wonderful person to be around.”

Charlton Commercial Manager Steve Sutherland said: “Charlie was just a fantastic character, always laughing and joking with the fans behind the goal but he was a hell of a goalkeeper. He was one of my favourite players growing up and I think for a lot of people at that time he’d have been a favourite player for them too. He played in a great side and was much loved.”

Wright, who was capped by Hong Kong while serving in the Forces, left the Addicks for Bolton Wanderers in 1971.

Everyone at Charlton Athletic would like to extend their condolences to Charlie's family at this difficult time.

Supporters will have the opportunity to pay tribute to Charlie Wright ahead of the Addicks' home game against Reading on Saturday, January 4th.
