North v South contest featuring leading names from English football confirmed
Bragging rights at stake on June 1 at The Valley as age old English rivalry is reignited in South London in first of its kind contest
The debate has raged for years – who would win in a North vs South clash? Now we are about to finally put that argument to the test.
On Sunday June 1 (kick off 4pm) The Valley, home of Charlton Athletic, will play host to the opening North England Football Club v South England Football Club fixture which will feature some of the finest talent to have pulled on the shirts of the biggest English clubs on both sides of the North-South divide.
Former Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United manager Harry Redknapp, who led Portsmouth to FA Cup glory in 2008, will take charge of South England FC.
North England FC will be led by legendary striker Robbie Fowler, a treble winner with Liverpool in 2001, who will be involved as player-manager.
South England FC Manager Harry Redknapp said: “This should be a great game and there is no doubt both teams will want to win. North versus South has seen some great club side matches in the past. Northern teams like Man United, Liverpool and, more recently, Manchester City may have dominated English football but it’s about time now that the South got back to winning a trophy again.”
North England FC Manager Robbie Fowler said: “There is obviously an element of fun to the game but I guarantee this will be competitive and serious because it will be great to beat them. This has been an idea in the making for a number of years. It’s a great concept that I hope everyone gets behind. The battle between North and South will always be there, the rivalry will always be there and there can only be one winner, hopefully it will be us.”
Further names will be announced in the coming days and weeks as we build up to what is guaranteed to be a highly entertaining and intriguing contest in order to settle one of English football’s great debates.
Each squad will feature 16 great players from the top-flight’s recent past as the teams from either side of England’s great divide get ready to take to the pitch in June with bragging rights at stake to determine whether North or South will come out on top.
