Olly Groome reports
Charlton’s U18s got the new year off to a flyer by recording a 6-0 victory over Cardiff City at Sparrows Lane on Saturday morning.
Alex Willis opened the floodgates with 17 minutes gone, diverting Albie Morgan’s low shot past the Bluebirds’ stopper from close range, and the striker helped himself to a second three minutes before half-time. Latching onto a long ball forward, he won a footrace with the goalkeeper, getting to the ball first to lift it over him and into the back of the net.
The young Addicks continued to dominate after the break and Morgan made it 3-0 from the penalty spot after 51 minutes when the midfielder was tripped in the box. Brendan Sarpong-Wiredu made it four moments later, rounding off a fine move by poking into the bottom right-hand corner.
Substitute Timmy Abraham was next to etch his name onto the scoresheet just after the hour mark, receiving the ball unmarked at the back post before stroking home Charlton’s fifth.
Triallist Joey Barone rounded matters up on 69 minutes, tapping home a rebound from close range to make it six, securing a sixth consecutive victory for Sergei Baltacha and Hamza Serrar’s side, who are now unbeaten in 11 league games with a record of 10 wins and one draw.
Charlton: Maynard-Brewer; Zemura (Barone 64), Yao (Wan 70), Pollard, Birch; Maloney, Sarpong-Wiredu, Morgan; Isiaka (Abraham 57), Willis, Doughty.
Subs (not used): Harvey.
Goals: Willis 17, 42, Morgan (pen) 51, Sarpong-Wiredu 55, Abraham 63, Barone 69.
