George Jones reports
Charlton’s U18s followed up their hugely impressive 13-1 friendly victory against Southend United last week by beating Crystal Palace at Sparrows Lane on Saturday.
The win keeps the young Addicks at the summit of Professional Development League 2 South and they began the match quickly.
Brendan Sarpong-Wiredu saw a point-blank shot saved by the outstretched leg of the Eagles’ stopper, before Alex Willis headed narrowly wide. Albie Morgan sent a volley dipping over, as the sides headed into the break with the scores goalless.
Charlton continued to probe in the second period. Mustapha Bangura-Williams’ teasing cross was very nearly turned into his own net by a Palace defender, who was saved only by the post, and Sarpong-Wiredu also struck the upright after getting on the end of Willis’ flick on.
It was not until the 83rd minute that the Addicks’ perseverance paid off when Willis headed his side in front at the back stick from Morgan’s deep corner delivery.
The points were made safe in the sixth minute of injury time when Timmy Abraham rounded off a swift counter attack to slot confidently past the keeper for 2-0.
