Charlton Athletic are delighted to announce that young midfielder Taylor Maloney has extended his contract with the club until the summer of 2020.
The 18-year-old, who joined the Addicks at U14 level, has made great progress within the academy in the last few years and made his senior debut in this season’s Checkatrade Trophy match at Crawley Town in August.
Maloney also featured when the Addicks staged a late comeback against Fulham U21s in the same competition in November and he is extremely pleased to have secured his future.
“It’s great news,” he told Valley Pass. “I’ve missed the last few weeks with a knee injury, which has been frustrating, but I cannot wait to get back out there and start playing again.
“Steve Avory told me just after my injury that I had been doing well and the club were going to be offering me an extension. I was delighted about that as I want to stay here and progress through to the first team.”
A product of the club’s partnership with the Harris Academy, Steve Avory believes that Maloney has benefitted from the extra contact time at the training ground in his younger years.
Avory said: “Taylor has had a very productive season. Over a year ago – as a second-year scholar – I maybe wouldn’t have envisaged the progress that he has made and that is all credit to him.
“We felt by the end of last season that he had earned his contract and it was always going to be interesting to see how he would develop in an U23 setting. He has probably been our most consistent player, when you look at his performances week in, week out.
“Those performances have got him his extended stay and we are delighted that we’ll be able to continue to work with Taylor for the next couple of years at least.”
Maloney’s interview will be available to watch in full on Valley Pass
