Unfortunately, Charlton couldn't replicate September's form into October, beginning the month with a feverish 5-3 midweek defeat to Scunthorpe United, a Lyle Taylor effort, and a Joe Aribo double providing the goals.
Another defeat followed against Coventry City at the weekend, Charlton on the receiving end of late drama as an Amadou Bakayoko brace countered Taylor’s 45th-minute penalty, although the Addicks controlled the match for large spells.
Charlton then returned to winning ways in stunning fashion, recording their largest ever win with an 8-0 drubbing of Stevenage. Debutant Toby Stevenson recorded a hat-trick, including a sublime curling effort to make it 6-0, while Igor Vetokele added a brace of his own, adding to Darren Pratley and Nicky Ajose's strikes. This pipped the previous record win set in 1953, an 8-1 win over Middlesbrough.
Buoyed by the historic eight-goal haul, Charlton returned to form in the league with a professional 2-0 victory against Barnsley courtesy of a terrific Karlan Grant double. The striker notched his first goal with a powerful low drive into the bottom corner before his second sealed the match seven minutes after the break, tapping into an empty net from Taylor’s pinpoint cross.
A mixed month ended with a point at The Valley against Oxford United and former Charlton gaffer Karl Robinson, with Taylor scoring the Addicks' goal, before a disappointing 1-0 defeat at Rochdale left Bowyer’s side in 13th place, five points adrift of the play-off places.
