Charlton get their first taste of 90 minutes in their pre-season campaign with their annual pre-season friendly against National League South side Welling United at Park View Road on Saturday afternoon (3pm).
The first friendly since returning from their training camp in Malaga will give Lee Bowyer’s men a first proper taste of action and allowing the manager to get a first real look at how his players have progressed so far.
New signing Macauley Bonne looks set to make his first ever appearance for the club, having missed the abandoned friendly in Spain against Gaz Metan Medias due to the funeral of former Leyton Orient boss, Justin Edinburgh.
With it being the Addicks’ first 90-minute match of the campaign, Bowyer will manage his players’ game time with a number of U23s set to complement the first-teamers at Park View Road.
The Wings, meanwhile, have secured some pre-season action under their belts already. They played out a 1-1 draw against Isthmian League Premier Division side Margate, before suffering a 3-1 defeat against National League side Bromley on Tuesday evening.
The 2018/19 campaign saw Welling finish a strong third place in National League South, securing a play-off position. The Wings were victorious in the semi-final, defeating fourth-place Chelmsford City 3-2, confirming their place in the play-off final and one match away from a return to the National League. Unfortunately, they suffered a 1-0 defeat to second place Woking, who took the final promotion spot into England’s fifth tier, while Welling remain in the sixth tier for the 2019/20 season under the management of Mark Goldberg and Hugo Langton.
Meanwhile, the Addicks got off to a winning start for their pre-season, beating Gaz Metran Medias 1-0 in Spain, with the match being abandoned after 49 minutes.
