Speaking after the Addicks' pre season victory at Welling United, Lee Bowyer spoke to Valley Pass about the match, the youngsters scoring, loan signings and the seasons target. Valley Pass costs just £6.50 per month and you can sign up here.
Bowyer on playing Welling in the pre-season friendly…
“It was a good workout for us, the first 45 minutes of a real proper game [for each of the players] It was good, I think it was a good challenge. I thought we looked better compared to this time last year when we played them. I’m happy, the result is not important to me, the important thing is that no one got injured, you’ll here me say that a lot throughout this pre-season!
"We’re really low on numbers as you can see, we’ve had to mix it about with the younger lads and they did themselves no harm, so it was a good day.”
On the youngsters getting the goals…
“They know what is asked of them. They’ve been training with us a bit and they know the way that we play and that you have to work hard out of possession, and they’ve taken that on board and I thought they done well, very neat and tidy in possession. so fair play to them.”
On loan signings…
"That’s going to be our plan we’re going to bring in five loan signings, there’s a lot of clubs that don’t do their loan business very early on, you might get the odd one or two lucky ones that you can persuade. But it’s normally the clubs are looking at their players and judging them at the moment so we’re teeing things up day by day. We’ll be okay."
On the target for this season…
"We have to just take each game as it comes because it’s going to be a completely different challenge. I think our main aim is to stay in the league. Let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. Our budget is small. And for me, to stay in the league would be a massive achievement alone. But I always look to do better than that. Like I keep saying I think we will surprise teams with the way we play and the way we press so lets see where it takes us, we’ll get safe and then see where we are then."
