Macauley Bonne spoke exclusively to Valley Pass after Charlton’s 3-0 win over Derby County on Saturday to discuss netting three goals in four games, Charlton continuing to surprise teams and looking ahead to the games against Bristol City and West Brom.
Speaking on scoring the opening goal of the fixture, what is now his third goal in four games for the Addicks, Bonne explained that he is happy to be back doing what he does best.
“I seem to be picking up to where I left off last season [with Leyton Orient]. I’m happy to be scoring goals again, that’s what I’m in the team to do and I’m happy to be doing it again.
“We’ve been working on it in training, the different movements, and the second that I saw Jonny [Williams] dart a line I created my own space near the front post.
“I actually gave a point where I wanted the ball and when it came across I just focused on getting a good connection on it and by the time I looked up it’s bouncing out of the net already and I just see Jonny’s face with a big smile on it.”
Derby County, who were the runners up in the Championship play-off’s last season, were tipped for promotion this season and, despite a shaky start to the season, are a strong side to play against. When asked about how much that result showcases Charlton’s ability in the second tier, Bonne explained that it is a massive thing for him playing against players he once looked up to.
“Last season they were flying. They’ve got players like Chris Martin, who I’ve looked at for the last few years as one of the number nines of the Championship! Now, we’re playing them, beating them 3-0 and I’m the one scoring goals to beat teams like this!
“It’s a massive thing for me. To play against my old friend Matt Clarke today was a bit funny as well.”
Looking ahead to the next few games away to Bristol City and West Brom, the striker insists he is raring to go again.
“I just want the games to come now. I’m ready and I just want to keep winning games”
