Speaking after Charlton’s 1-0 victory at Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night, Naby Sarr explained his individual brilliance in setting up Lyle Taylor for the only goal of the game.
“I just wanted to put the ball into a good area, so I’m really pleased I got to help the team. I’m happy Lyle managed to get on the end of it!” he said.
Winning the ball back before delivering an inch-perfect cross for Taylor to volley home, Charlton took a 1-0 lead into the break. Despite his role in the goal, Sarr was more pleased with his defensive performance as the team worked hard to keep a clean sheet.
“It was a great team performance, we dug deep to keep the clean sheet and we all put our bodies on the line.
“We were on the front foot more against Forest, we were getting the ball back in great areas, we defended really well and that was the difference.”
The defender was particularly pleased with how the defence nullified the threat of winger Joe Lolley, who has been in impressive form for Forest this term.
“We did really well against him, there’s so many good players in this league, they’re all really sharp so you have to be focussed for 95 minutes. If you switch off for one minute, he will put in a great ball or finish a chance.”
Meanwhile, the 26-year old believes that the win at the City Ground can help the team push on and string together some good results to climb up the table.
“We all know what we can do, we see the quality that we have in training. The attitude and togetherness shows that we can beat anyone in this league if we’re confident.”
“We have some bodies back now, we’re stronger. This league is so difficult but, with the team and the quality that we have, we don’t have to be afraid of anyone. We’ve done well against the top six sides in the league so we should be confident in what we’re doing.
“With a win like this one, the confidence is building and we have to build on the win to go forward and climb the table.”
With the Addicks extending the gap to the relegation zone, with six points separating the Addicks and Wigan Athletic, Sarr has encouraged the team to carry on playing to win,
“Of course, we keep an eye on the table but the main thing is to play and win every game. If we play to win every game we will grab points and climb the table, so that’s what we want to do.”
