Charlton Athletic are delighted to complete the signing of exciting left-back Ian Maatsen on a season-long loan from Chelsea.
Maatsen follows in the footsteps of Jay Dasilva and Conor Gallagher, who both had very successful loan spells with the Addicks in recent seasons.
The 18-year-old Dutch youth international is well thought of at Chelsea following his arrival at the club from PSV Eindhoven in 2018.
Lee Bowyer has been looking to add an attacking left-back that fits the club’s strategy and was pleased to complete the signing of Maatsen. He said: “He’s a very exciting left-back. He’s ambitious [with the ball], very good in possession, he has great energy, great pace. I would say he is quite similar to Jay Dasilva, the way he travels with the ball and goes past people. He’s exciting and different to what we have.”
The youngster is set for his first taste of senior adult football and trained with his new teammates for the first time this morning. He said: "I'm buzzing to get started. I will learn from the boys, I think I will do well here. I will work hard and try to show my best."
Maatsen becomes second signing of the day, following the arrival of Ryan Inniss, and the seventh signing of the Thomas Sandgaard era. The Charlton owner said: “We want to bring in the right players that match the way we want to play and Ian Maatsen is a player of very high pedigree. He is highly thought of at Chelsea and has played for Holland’s youth teams, so I’m looking forward to seeing him at The Valley.”
