MATCH PREVIEW | Charlton v Rochdale

The Addicks will be hoping for a much-needed boost as they welcome Rochdale to The Valley on Tuesday evening (7pm).

With just one in seven under their belts, three points would provide Charlton with the perfect remedy as they look to keep touch with the promotion-chasing pack at the top end of the table.

Rochdale come to SE7 in 21st position in the League One table, off the back of just two wins in their last 11 league outings, but will be boosted by an impressive second-half comeback at home to Crewe Alexandra on Saturday. After finding themselves 3-0 down at the break, they fought back to 3-3 to earn a point.

Ryan Inniss and Alfie Doughty remain sidelined, as do Akin Famewo and Andrew Shinnie, although the latter duo may be back in the squad for next week's trip to Peterborough United.

Ben Watson will also miss out with a hamstring injury, as will Marcus Maddison with an ankle injury, while Darren Pratley will serve the second of his three-game suspension.

For Rochdale, captain Eoghan O'Connell will be out after limping out of Saturday's draw with Crewe.

Charlton Boss Lee Bowyer: “We'll have to be at it because, in previous games, they've shown they can concede four or five but also score four or five, so that tells you a lot.

"They were 3-0 down at the weekend and drew 3-3. They will create chances so we'll have to be at it defensively. As long as we do that, we'll create chances at the other end."

Rochdale boss Brian Barry-Murphy: "It’s going to be a very long next spell of the season because there are so many games left, it’s different to anything we’ve done before, so we want to make a commitment to each other that we’re going to show those fighting characteristics in every game. The scorelines will be what they will be, but as long as we show that, we have a pretty good idea where the performances will lead to and that will be results.”

Charlton and Rochdale have met on 15 previous occasions with the Addicks winning 10, Dale five and the remaining three games ending in draws.

The last encounter came on the final day of the 2018/19 season with Charlton claiming a memorable 4-0 victory to climb two places into third position on goal difference, earning home advantage in the play-offs. Joe Aribo, Lyle Taylor, Krystian Bielik and a Calvin Andrew own goal ensured an emphatic win at The Valley.

Trevor Kettle will be the man in the middle on Tuesday evening. He has taken charge of 15 games this season, producing 38 yellow cards and two reds.

He last refereed a Charlton fixture in December 2018 - a 2-0 win over AFC Wimbledon at The Valley which saw Naby Sarr dismissed in the first minute of the game and Mitch Pinnock also sent off before the break for two bookable offences.

The match will be played behind closed doors and supporters are reminded to maintain social distancing guidelines and to stay away from the stadium when the match is taking place.
