Charlton selected for final three in the annual Football v Homophobia awards

Charlton are proud to have been selected in the final three under the club category for the annual Football v Homophobia awards.

Last year Charlton finished runners-up at the awards, which is set to take place this year on February 5th, the Addicks are competing alongside Liverpool and Sheffield United for top prize.

The Professional Game Award recognises professional football clubs who have shown dedication to improving the landscape of football for LGBT+ people and who have worked in numerous ways to create better inclusion and participation of LGBT+ people at all levels of football over the past year.

Representatives of the Charlton family have also been nominated in the final three of other categories at this year’s Football v Homophobia awards.

Rob Harris and Gary Ginnaw, both members of the club’s LGBT+ supporters group, the Proud Valiants, have been nominated in the Hero Award. The award goes to an individual who has shown dedication and passion for improving football, by fighting LGBT+ phobia and promoting better inclusion for LGBT+ people, making the beautiful game, a game for everyone.

Charlton Invicta, the club and community trust affiliated LGBT+ friendly football team, are in the final three of the grassroots category after winning the category last year.

The club’s Commercial Director Wayne Mumford said: “Charlton has consistently been one of the leaders in fighting for equality in football and we are very pleased to once again be very well-represented at the Football v Homophobia awards.

“Working with our brilliant community trust and with the excellent drive and support from the Proud Valiants, Charlton continues to be a leader in making sure football is a place for everyone.

“To have two members of the Charlton family in the final three for the Football v Homophobia Hero Award highlights just how lucky we are to have a fanbase that wants to help continue to drive this club forwards.”

The Community Trust's chief executive Jason Morgan said: “Charlton can be extremely proud of the inclusion work that has been ongoing over numerous years, these nominations are huge recognition for the great work of individuals and the role Invicta and Proud Valiants have been doing as an important part of the Charlton family.

"When CACT affiliated Charlton Invicta to the club, it was to provide support, a platform to promote equality, inclusion, education and drive change. Congratulations to Rob and Gary for the tremendous hard work they and others are doing.”

The club will help launch this year’s Football v Homophobia Month of Action with a host of activity around the club’s home match against Portsmouth on January 30th. Click here for more information.
