Adkins praises his team's resilience after 2-1 win at Fleetwood

Nigel Adkins was pleased with the resilience his side showed in a 2-1 win at Fleetwood Town.

The Addicks created plenty of chances, with Jonathan Leko and Jayden Stockley both finding the net, and defended bravely as the Cod Army looked for a late equaliser.

Speaking to CharltonTV after the game Adkins said: “I’m pleased for the players, they’ve shown a real resilience again. We should have scored more goals, Jonathan Leko scored a good goal, Charlie Kirk really could have finished the one he had in the first half, Josh Davison hits the post and nearly had a tap-in, which just took a little deflection off their keeper. Jayden Stockley scored a really good goal, making an impact off the bench.

“Then we’ve had to weather the storm at the end with the long throws coming in, the players have shown great resilience. There is a good spirit amongst everybody and we’re pleased we’re coming away with three points which is important.

“You can see we’ve got a group of players who are gaining with individual levels of fitness and we’ve got a group of players who are all having a right go for each other which is important.”

The Addicks had plenty of chances and Adkins said: “Today, towards the end, we should have had the game out of sight, they were putting long throws into the box and you’ve got to defend that and the players have gone and done that.

“There was a good resilience and a good spirit amongst everybody, we’ve got goals in the team and at some point it’s all going to click and we’re going to be a lot more ruthless with the opportunities that do get created.”

Leko scored the Addicks opener and put in the cross for Stockley’s winner.

Adkins was pleased with the performance of the winger. He said: “He’s been really good since he’s joined and we’re really pleased with that. He can effect game in so many ways, so from our point of view it is working out how to get him on the ball to be effective. We talk about Corey Blackett-Taylor, Charlie Kirk and DJ [Diallang Jaiyesimi] – who wasn’t on the bench today and he’s been really good for us this season, so we’ve got really good attacking players, we’ve got to get them the ball and let them do that magic.”

Stockley netted his third goal from the season in the 69th minute to win the game for Charlton. Adkins said: “Jayden, although he’s not been in the team, he’s a big player for us. Every day he comes in and he’s doing the right things. We’ve got Ben Watson driving standards, Harry Arter has just come in, Chrissy Gunter – we’ve got good senior players who come in, we’ve got to keep demanding that you do the basics well to an elite level every single day because that helps everyone around you.

“We’re all involved, it’s an us and we’ve got to keep working hard to get ourselves out of the situation we’ve put ourselves in, from a points total point of view. If we keep doing the basics well every day and we have the spirit and determination it will take us a long way, because we’ve got goals in this team.”
