Charlton Athletic Women Manager Karen Hills has hailed her squad after Saturday’s 4-0 win against Watford, following a three-game week.
“I’m really pleased, I think the girls have been incredible this week. We played Blackburn at the start of the week, clean sheet, two goals and then going into the Brighton game which was always going to be a tough game – I thought we held our own and came out with a lot of credit, so there were a lot of positives coming into this game.
“We got the job done in great style, four goals and a clean sheet. I’m really pleased for the girls and it’s been a great week of work. We knew we needed to come out of the blocks quick, we needed to maintain that momentum, we needed to move the ball quickly. The surface out there was as slippery as anything, the weather was coming down, but we dealt with the conditions really well.”
Anna Filbey got the Addicks’ first goal of the game after just three minutes.
“The first goal settled us down nice and early and two goals in quick succession puts us in a really good position. I thought we controlled the game, but there were patches in the game, especially with Eartha [Cumings] pulling off that fantastic save, I think that could’ve looked quite different if that went in, but it was a world-class save if I’m honest, I thought it was outstanding how she pulled that off.”
Summer signing Elise Hughes got her first goal and her first hat-trick for the club.
“I’m really pleased for Elise, she’s worked really hard over the past couple of weeks and hasn’t got the rub of the green but I thought today she was excellent and thoroughly deserved those three goals.”
The Addicks return to The Oakwood on Sunday, October 10th when they host Bristol City. Karen Hills’ side have won both of their home games so far this season and will be looking to keep their 100% home win record.
“It’s really early stages of the season, we’ve started well at our home ground. We’ve definitely got to do a lot of recovering from now until then, we’ve got a fantastic squad of players that are physically and mentally fit and when you win a game on the back of that week we’ve just had it gives us good momentum going into the week of work.
“We’re going to plan hard and work hard at the training ground and we’re going to look to do exactly the same against Bristol City which is to go at them, try to win the game but at the same time make sure that we put in a performance we can be proud of.
“We’re really pleased with the squad that we’ve got, the strength and depth is excellent and we’re not afraid to use those subs when we need to.”
