Charlton Athletic Women secured a solid point on the road on Sunday afternoon as the Addicks battled out a 0-0 draw against Sheffield United at The Technique Stadium.
The Addicks started the day in fourth position with a chance to go into third depending on other results.
Charlton started off well and had the ball in the back of the net just four minutes in, however a Charlton player was adjudged to have fouled Sheffield United goalkeeper Fran Kitching in the process.
The game got tighter as time went on, with neither side able to create any clear-cut chances as both sides battled in midfield.
Charlton had a brilliant chance to open the scoring through Megan Wynne in the 17th minute. Hannah Godfrey looped a ball over the top, forcing Kitching to come off her line. The goalkeeper misjudged the flight of the ball and Wynne was through on goal, but a superb last-ditch tackle by a Sheffield United player forced it out for a corner.
Ten minutes later there was a shout for a Charlton penalty after Emma Follis was tackled in the area, but the referee waved away the claims.
Sheffield United had a good chance of their own just minutes later, Sweetman-Kirk’s point blank effort was well saved by Eartha Cumings.
It became a fiery affair in the second half as both sides battled for possession.
Sheffield United had a good chance to go ahead in the 71st minute after a mistake in the Charlton defence. However the forward couldn’t capitalise.
Hannah Godfrey did brilliantly to clear a header off the line in the 77th minute as the hosts pressured the Addicks back line.
Charlton had a chance to snatch all three points deep into stoppage time, a 93rd minute corner fell to Godfrey whose header was straight at Kitching.
The Addicks are back in league action next weekend when they face Crystal Palace at Hayes Lane.
