First-half goals from George Byers and Callum Paterson condemned Charlton to defeat against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Saturday afternoon.
Johnnie Jackson made two changes from the midweek reverse against MK Dons, restoring Ben Purrington and Elliot Lee to his starting line-up whilst Scott Fraser and Jayden Stockley made timely returns to the matchday 18.
It would prove to be a frustrating start for the Addicks in Sheffield, though, as Byers gave the hosts the lead, heading home Barry Bannan’s inswinging free-kick delivery from six yards.
At the other end, Jordan Storey threw himself in front of Lee’s goalbound effort before Albie Morgan retrieved possession to deliver a tantalising cross to the far post, though it just evaded Lee and Purrington.
Wednesday almost doubled their lead when Bannan was afforded space on the edge of the 18-yard box, but the midfielder could only send his curling effort wide of Craig MacGillivray’s right upright.
And the Owls did add a second moments before the interval. Massimo Luongo found the overlapping run of left wing-back Marvin Johnson, who delivered a pinpoint low centre for Paterson to turn in from close range.
Stockley replaced Morgan at the interval as Jackson upped the ante and the Addicks soon crafted the first opening of the second period.
Jaiyesimi stole possession from Johnson in a promising position before feeding Mason Burstow, though the forward could only fire straight at Peacock-Farrell.
Only a crucial intervention from Chris Gunter prevented the hosts from adding a third at the other end; the Welshman produced a last-ditch block to foil Johnson’s goalbound effort.
Akin Famewo rose highest to meet Lee’s free-kick and force Peacock-Farrell into a smart stop before the ball was bundled home by a red shirt, only for the referee to sound his whistle for an infringement.
