Garner: "The bottom line is we want the best players possible that fit the style that we are going to play"

Charlton’s new men’s first-team Manager, Ben Garner, is looking to add to the Addicks squad this summer.

The 42-year-old signed a three-year contract with the Addicks at The Valley on Wednesday and was immediately in recruitment meetings planning for the 2022/23 season.

He said: “We all want the same thing, we want good players at this football club, we have had a lot of negotiations over the last few weeks in making sure that we are all happy with everything and we are all on the same page, which we are.

“My role is to support that, make recommendations and try and get the best players possible for how we are going to play, Thomas [Sandgaard] has been fantastic with that in terms of understanding what I want and like I say we are all on the same page, we are going to use all of the tools available to us. But the bottom line is we want the best players possible that fit the style that we are going to play.”

The club has a focus on playing attacking football on the front foot next season and while Garner wants to add to the squad, he’s also looking forward to working with the players already at Charlton.

He's currently working his way through watching every Charlton game from last season to get a better understanding of the squad.

He said: “I am really pleased with what is here, there is a really good nucleus to the squad, obviously we need to add to that now. It’s not just good players coming in, it is the right players, the players that fit what we want to do, not just in terms of style of play but in terms of character and attitude, we want good people as well as good players. There is a good core here, I am looking forward to meeting them and getting to work, working hard to add to that and get the best possible squad in place ahead of the new season.”
