Shrewsbury Town 0 Charlton 1
Charlton continued a positive start to the season with a 1-0 away win at Shrewsbury Town as Gassan Ahadme scored his first goal for the Addicks.
The victory saw Nathan Jones' side keep a fourth clean sheet and move to second in Sky Bet League One.
The Addicks started on the front foot, with Thierry Small getting the first glimpse of the goal in the fourth minute, blasting a left-footed shot over from just outside the Shrewsbury box.
Four minutes later and Conor Coventry thought he had given his side the lead with a rasping half volley from the edge of the area that had goalkeeper Toby Savin beaten, only for the ball to go narrowly past the post and bounce back off the stanchion behind the goal.
Shrewsbury grew into the game with Leo Castledine seeing a double-effort blocked by brave Charlton defenders, before then heading over from a deep Mal Benning cross.
Greg Docherty, against his former club, saw a shot on goal deflected wide but despite plenty of endeavour from both sides, the game remained scoreless at half-time.
The Addicks started the second half with an intensity and took the lead four minutes after the break. Coventry’s deep corner was met by Lloyd Jones at the back post. The defender’s header dipped under the crossbar with Ahadme able to bundle in his first Charlton goal.
Will Mannion had his first big save of the game in the 68th minute, spreading himself well to keep out Morgan Feeney from close range.
Substitute Daniel Kanu saw a shot deflected just over, as Shrewsbury took chances, playing a higher line in the final 20 minutes chasing an equaliser that never came.
The Addicks travel to Cambridge United in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy on Tuesday before Saturday’s game against Blackpool at The Valley.
