Campbell double as Addicks tame Terriers

Charlton 4 Huddersfield Town 0

Charlton made it eight wins in a row at The Valley with the 4-0 destruction of sixth-placed Huddersfield Town.

Tyreece Campbell was outstanding, scoring twice, with Matty Godden netting his 16th of the season and an own goal from unfortunate Terriers' stopper Lee Nicholls, after Greg Docherty's shot hit the crossbar and bounced back off him into the goal.

The Addicks were outstanding from start to finish, from Godden’s opener just 30 seconds into the game, to Lloyd Jones’ determined block to keep Charlton’s clean sheet deep in stoppage time.

Cheered on by the second highest attendance at The Valley this season, Charlton started the game quickly. Thierry Small won the ball high up the pitch and played in a lovely right-footed cross for Godden. The Sniffer Dog, as he is affectionately known by his teammates, lost his marker and got to the ball first to head past goalkeeper Nicholls. The goal beat Campbell’s 36-second opener against Cambridge United on Boxing Day to become the Addicks’ quickest of the season.

Charlton’s second came in the 17th minute, with Huddersfield only able to clear the ball to Luke Berry. The midfielder found Campbell with a controlled header, whose first touch, advancing into the box was perfect. His second touch, a low, left-footed shot, was even better, going across the Terriers' goalkeeper and nestling in the bottom corner of the net.

Huddersfield’s first effort on goal came in the 27th minute, with Ben Wiles hitting high and wide from just inside the penalty area.

The Charlton chances continued, Godden hit just wide from a Berry pass and then from a clever Small pass before a low, left-footed Docherty shot was well-saved by Nicholls.

Nathan Jones’ side came out firing again at the start of the second half and Campbell gave Huddersfield another warming, cutting in from the left and forcing a low save from Nicholls.

It was eight minutes into the second half that Campbell got his second of the game. Conor Coventry won the ball and played a neat, disguised pass into the path of Docherty, who fed Berry. The former Luton midfielder passed to Campbell, who, cutting inside, curled a right-footed shot perfectly into the bottom corner of the net.

Charlton’s fourth came on the hour mark, Campbell’s pass from the left found Docherty on the edge of the box. His powerful shot hit the crossbar and bounced off Nicholls and into the goal.

There was still time for Chuks Aneke to shoot just wide and for a big penalty appeal for what looked like a foul on Kaheim Dixon, before Lloyd Jones’ big defensive block.

The Addicks are now unbeaten in 12 at home and have kept 18 clean sheets in the league this season.

Nathan Jones’ side travel to Mansfield Town on Tuesday before returning to The Valley next Saturday for the visit of Lincoln City.
