Jones: 'I've really enjoyed it'

Lloyd Jones says his Sky Bet League One Player of the Month nomination is a reflection of the team's positive start to the 2024/25 campaign.

The centre-back has impressed during Charlton's opening five league fixtures, picking up three clean sheets and scoring a late winner at Wigan Athletic on matchday one.

“I think it's been a really solid start," he said. "We've been in every game, and I actually believe we could have won every game. 10 points from the first five games, I’ll take that all day.

“I’m really pleased to have been nominated. It’s a reflection on the whole defence and the team with how we've started the season. I'm honoured to be up for Player of the Month."

Nathan Jones has fielded an unchanged back three in all the Addicks’ league outings so far, and the defender admitted he is loving life alongside Macaulay Gillesphey and summer signing Alex Mitchell.

“I've really enjoyed it, and it’s still the early stages," he explained. "The first time we all played together as a trio was the Portsmouth game, and from there we've kept getting stronger. No one has really broken us down as of yet, so we need to keep that going."

Jones was appointed vice-captain ahead of the new campaign having previously worked under the boss at Luton Town.

“I’m loving every second of it,” he smiled. “I like to think of myself as a leader and I'm glad that the gaffer has given me his trust to be the vice-captain. I’m quite vocal and I like to think I lead by example when I’m out on the pitch.

“I don’t think the gaffer gives anyone an inch. Within the team, if you come off it, he's on you like a rash. He's a motivator and a winner."

Looking ahead to this weekend's trip to Shrewsbury Town, he said: “There is no such thing as an easy game in this league, obviously also being away from home. We want to get back to winning ways.

"The supporters play a massive role. They give us that extra 5% and it makes that difference. They've been brilliant all season."
