Nathan Jones believes his side need to keep plugging away to get back to winning ways.

The Addicks have had the better of the chances in away defeats to Exeter City and Huddersfield Town.

Speaking after his side’s 2-1 loss to the Terriers, he said: “We started really well. We end up giving the ball away from playing out from the back and that gave them a little bit of momentum and then we lost our way for 10 minutes in terms of conceding and then we could have conceded again when they hit the bar – both chances were set plays. So we have to be better from that. Then we were in the ascendancy, we get the goal and then effectively the red card changed the game.”

The sending-off of skipper Greg Docherty came in the 36th minute – four minutes after Matty Godden’s penalty-spot equaliser.

When asked about the decision to show Docherty red, Jones said: “It's very difficult to comment, but so much is happening in football games now that I just don't understand. I got sent off in recent weeks for something that was quite baffling, then you can't show any kind of frustration, but any kind of little things sometimes can get turned into big ones. I feel it's a yellow card because what he did, he tries to clear the ball but he's nipped in, it’s nothing malicious and there's nothing really dangerous in it. It's just a miss-timed challenge, which is a yellow all day long. I understand that. But a red? When people do professional fouls and boot people, like TC [Tyreece Campbell] had against Wrexham, like [Herbie] Kane did again today – they're worse.”

The Charlton players showed their effort and created plenty of chances but weren’t able to find an equaliser. They were clapped off by nearly 1,000 travelling supporters.

“The fans have been magnificent and we're not giving them enough at the minute,” Jones said. “Look, we won our [EFL Trophy] group. We're still in the FA Cup. There's lots of games that we're winning, but the league form at the minute, we have to improve because if we don't improve then we're going to drift and we're going to be too far away from people, because people are winning games. Others are winning games and at the minute, we're conceding when we shouldn't be conceding.

"We have to keep plugging away, keep working hard and then hopefully getting [injured] players back as well will help that. Today, we saw TC coming back, which is good, he returned from a few weeks out and then we'll hopefully and get more injured players back.”
