Nathan Jones was frustrated with his side’s defensive display after the Addicks six-game unbeaten run came to an end with a 4-2 loss at Rotherham United.
The Millers controlled the match, scoring twice in the opening 15 minutes, and while Miles Leaburn and Matty Godden both found the net for Charlton, the Addicks rarely looked like taking anything from the game.
Speaking to CharltonTV, Jones said: “I’m really disappointed, I didn't see that coming. I thought we were really poor. We didn't do the basics right, we didn't head the ball, we didn't get on seconds. We allowed them to head the ball, allowed them to secure it, and then to get a real dominant footing in the game.
“What we've been really good at is defending our box and outworking teams and today we didn't do that. We were as bad as we've been defensively. We got out-run, out-fought, and we just didn't do the basics well today. We got exactly what we deserved.
“Rotherham were excellent. They were set up to play like they did and we didn't handle it. I think we gifted them the goals they scored, but they had other chances which they could have scored.”
Charlton are back in action on Tuesday with a trip to Bolton.
“We need a reaction,” Jones said. “We need to bounce back from that because that isn't good enough. The traveling fans I feel for them today. I feel for us as well as staff. I always say to us [the players and staff], it's all about us, it's not about opposition, it's about us. If we're the best versions of ourselves, then we will win games, but today we were a mile off.”
