Rotherham United 4 Charlton 2
The Addicks' six-game unbeaten run in the league came to an end with a 4-2 loss at in-form Rotherham United.
The home side controlled much of the game and took an early two-goal lead. Miles Leaburn pulled one back for the Addicks just before the break but Rotherham restored their two-goal advantage almost immediately and then netted again shortly after half-time. Matty Godden was able to score a late consolation goal in stoppage time but Rotherham held on to secure a comfortable three points.
Nathan Jones named the same XI that has started each of the Addicks four previous league games and in doing so handed academy graduate Tyreece Campbell his 100th appearance for the club.
The Millers started strongly though and their opener came in the ninth minute with former Addick, Andre Green, finding the net after Malik Wilks’ touched to him in what looked like an offside position.
The home side scored their second just five minutes later with Green turning provider, passing to Alex MacDonald, on the right, who made no mistake with a low finish back across goal.
Luke Berry was first to trouble another former Addick, Dillon Phillips, getting his head to a Josh Edwards cross.
Rotherham nearly had a third but Macaulay Gillesphey was back just in time to clear Wilks’ shot off the line after the striker had rounded Ashley Maynard-Brewer.
With the home side controlling much of the opening half hour, Nathan Jones opted for a change of shape, moving from a 3-5-2 to a 4-diamond-2.
The change allowed the Addicks to get back into the game and at the end of a difficult half, the they pulled a goal back. Alex Mitchell won the ball high up the pitch and fed Greg Docherty down the right wing. The Charlton captain pulled a low ball across goal to Leaburn who calmly slotted home his fifth goal in as many league games.
Rotherham were able to regain their two-goal lead before the break when the Addicks weren’t able to deal with a Millers’ set piece and Zak Jules finished with a header after his initial effort was blocked.
The home side added a fourth eight minutes into the second half, with Green flicking on to his strike partner Wilks who finished excellently with a chip over Maynard-Brewer.
Substitute Matty Godden came close to pulling a goal back for the Addicks. The striker’s smart movement meant he was first to a wicked cross from the right from Tyreece Campbell. However, his effort was too close to Phillips.
Godden got his goal deep into stoppage time with an excellent finish from just outside the area after Allan Campbell had won the ball.
Following defeat the Addicks will be looking to bounce back on Tuesday when Nathan Jones' side travel to Bolton Wanderers.
