After a long month, Charlton Athletic Women are heading up north for their final game of March still unbeaten in the Barclays Championship, to play Sunderland.
Charlton
This weekend is Charlton's fifth game out of five, playing three of the top five teams in the past few weeks. Last week they took on league leaders Birmingham at The Valley and scored an added time equaliser to take a point from Birmingham and keep themselves in the title race. They also walked away with a point from London City Lionesses at the beginning of the month and Bristol City just a couple of weeks ago. They also secured three points against Blackburn Rovers confirming their third place position for the moment.
Sunderland
Melanie Reay’s side suffered their second derby day defeat last week in front of 38,000 at St James Park. It hasn't been their strongest month, losing 2-1 to Portsmouth who are battling to get out of the relegation spot, 2-0 to London City Lionesses but beat local rivals Durham 2-0 at the beginning of the month.
Head to head
Earlier this season, the two sides faced off in an exciting 3-3 draw, with Karin Muya scoring two goals to secure a late comeback for Charlton. Their first ever encounter was back in 2021, where Sunderland came out on top with a 0-1 win. The teams have faced a total of six times, with Charlton winning twice.
