‘Stoptober’ is back in Greenwich once again, encouraging smokers in the borough to stop smoking for 28 days.
Research shows that if you can stay smoke-free for 28 days, you’re five times more likely to quit cigarettes for good, which is one of the easiest ways to boost your health and wellbeing, not to mention save you money!
In partnership with the Royal Borough of Greenwich, Kick the Habit, Charlton Athletic Community Trust’s stop-smoking programme, will be out and about all over Greenwich ready to support you through your quit journey.
Kick the Habit has teamed up with this national campaign to offer free one-on-one support, and plenty of friendly advice on stopping smoking forever.
Greenwich resident Yvonne, from Eltham, quit smoking during Stoptober last year. She said: “I don’t know if I would ever have quit if the Kick the Habit team hadn’t stopped me that day.
“All the guys were so helpful by keeping me motivated every time I saw them, as well as during in the drop-in sessions and weekly phone calls I received. They’re a great bunch of guys who provide a great service.”
And it’s never too late. Another who took part last year is Audrey, aged 78. “Without your help I wouldn’t have stopped smoking,” she said. “The team are a really nice, helpful bunch of guys and the Kick the Habit service is brilliant. They were always on hand to help without any hesitation if I needed them.”
But we know quitting isn’t easy, so with the help of our advisors, it could be a life changing moment when you decide to take part in Stoptober.
CACT’s Kick the Habit team will be all over Royal Greenwich from today until the end of October, so keep an eye out on our Twitter account to find out where we’ll be.
Not only will they be offering advice, they will also tell you about Kick the Habit’s service, which has been helping people quit smoking all over Greenwich since 2007, with great results.
You’ll also hear about the drop-in sessions that run in the area throughout the year, giving one-to-one advice over 12 weeks and a range of nicotine replacement products to help deal with cravings.
They’ll also help you discover what will motivate you to quit, such as doing so for your family and friends, tell you about other services in the area, or simply provide that boost to start your journey, as was the case with Sonia, from Eltham.
She said: “I initially signed up via the outreach team in the high street. The team told me about what was on offer, such as the drop in, local pharmacy or GP. I decided on support via my GP as this was the most convenient option for me personally, but if I hadn’t been stopped that day I would never have even given quitting any thought.”
So if you wish to quit smoking for good, take part in Stoptober and work towards becoming a healthier you. You’ll be able to ask questions, listen to advice and be given an information pack on the roadshow and receive continued support.
The Kick the Habit team will be running our Stoptober outreach all over Greenwich, at places such as Thamesmere Leisure Centre, Tesco in Woolwich and Co-Op on Plumstead Common. But if you can’t catch them, below are the locations of our regular drop ins, which take place throughout the year:
