Ella Rutherford caught up with the club following the Addicks’ historic 3-1 win against Coventry United on Sunday at The Oakwood in Crayford.
Rutherford scored Charlton Women’s first ever professional goal after just 48 seconds as the Addicks cruised to victory.
“It was amazing, on a personal note I’ve been working really hard in pre-season – I’ve been getting on the scoresheet and been wanting to get on the scoresheet. I had a bit of a crack at it last season, had a few injuries so this season I’ve tried to come fresh, new and improved me.
“I think it was a complete performance from us,” Rutherford explained, “we’ve been working really hard in pre-season and it’s just good that it’s come off in the first game of the season. We’ve been clinical in front of goal and ruthless.”
The 21-year-old also scored the Addicks’ third goal of the game, striking a thunderous shot into the top corner to secure Karen Hills’ side all three points.
“I just put my foot through it and hoped for the best! It was a really, really good performance from the team. I’m just really happy to be a part of this journey.
“We know that the league is not going to be easy this year, a lot of teams have put a lot behind the clubs so we’ve just got to take each game as it comes and just carry on our journey, I’m really excited.”
Charlton fans witnessed the team play for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic, Rutherford explained how much of a difference the supporters made on the day.
“It was amazing, it’s so good to have everyone back. It really gives you that little boost you need – when it was 1-1 the fans were cheering from the side and it gives you that confidence to go and put another one away. They played a massive part in the win for us.”
The Addicks face Durham this weekend as Karen Hills’ side aim to build on Sunday’s win.
“We’re really excited just to get back out there again, we’re going to work hard this week and prepare for Durham.”
